F-You Gum Disease!

That’s what I say every time I put that heaping tablespoon of virgin organic coconut oil in my mouth each morning. Once you get past the initial slight gag reflex, it’s actually not all that bad! The first, hm, I’d say 10-15 seconds are a bit wishy washy, but once the oil heats up and liquifies it’s golden! What the H am I talking about? Well, if you read the My Morning Ritual post, you would know exactly what I am referring to….

Oil Pulling!

I have been practising this ancient Ayurvedic technique daily for the last 2 weeks now. I wanted to take it for a good spin before writing about it because I wanted to be able to give you an authentic compilation of my experience. As a Blogger, this is now my job. I must find, experiment and report, offering up my from the heart, genuine experience on the matter. Whether I love it or hate it, I’m going to do it and I’m going to do it for YOU. Why? Because you deserve the truth and it is my purpose to make sure you get it! (you’re welcome.)

So, what IS Oil Pulling? Well, in short it is swishing oil around in your mouth. Sounds pretty weird, right? That’s what I thought at first. That’s why it took me, no word of a lie, nearly 5 months to give it a go. I had originally heard of the technique from one of my favourite healthy-bloggers, Jessica Ainscough. You can see her original post here: The Wellness Warrior

Oil Pulling is an ancient Ayervedic practice dating back thousands of years that was re-introduced to modern society in the earlier 90’s boasting huge claims that this simple ritual could cure a multitude of diseases such as gum disease, heart disease and hormonal disorders.

The How to’s:

First thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, take 1 tbsp of oil into your mouth. Traditionally Sesame and/or Sunflower were used. Personally, I use Coconut Oil. You could also add a drop or two of an antibacterial essential oil such as tea tree, oil of oregano or spearmint, but this is totally not necessary and entirely optional. Begin to swish and move the oil in, around and through your teeth for about 15-20 minutes, think ‘mouth wash’. When your 15-20 minutes are up (or your jaw is tired!), spit the oil out in the sink, toilet or organics. DO NOT SWALLOW. This is important because the oil is now rendered TOXIC. You can rinse your mouth with water and/or brush your teeth (with flouride free toothpaste)

“The oil acts like a cleanser. When you put it in your mouth and work it around your teeth and gums it “pulls” out bacteria and other debris,” ~Bruce Fife

Benefits:

Aside from the obvious whiter teeth, fresher breath, no more swollen gums, what other benefits can you expect? Are you ready for this? It’s kind of crazy, seriously!

  • decrease in headaches
  • improves eczema
  • helps with ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs
  • reduce or slow growth of malignant tumors
  • better sleep
  • whiter, straighter teeth
  • healthy, pink gums
  • increased energy
  • clear sinuses
  • less severe asthma
  • decreased allergies symptoms
  • improved PMS symptoms
  • regulated menstrual cycles
  • improved lymphatic system
  • clear skin

What have I noticed?

Well, first of all, my teeth feel IMPECCABLY clean ALL the time now! It’s like they have this new little protective barrier over them. It’s fabulous! Also, my teeth were never white. They were always slightly off. I’ve spoken to a number of dentists and they all told me it was just the shade of my teeth. I couldn’t whiten them because that’s just how they are. Well, I can honestly say that my teeth are whiter! Noticeably whiter too. They are bright and shiny like beautiful little chicklets! I am so proud!

That all being said… Are you ready to give it a shot? I promise you won’t regret it. It’s a very small routine to add to your morning rituals that will make an incredible difference in your life. Or if it helps, think of it this way, if you are not a chatty morning person, you can use it as an excuse to not talk to anyone while you get ready in the morning!

If you feel inclined to give it a shot, and I sincerely hope that you do, please shoot me a comment or connect with me somehow and let me know how it went! I love hearing feedback 🙂

Cheers to sexy mouths everywhere!
